Aaron Johnson

Aaron Johnson is a Los Angeles–based painter whose luminous, flowing compositions blend Color Field painting with surreal figuration. Working on raw canvas laid on the floor, he allows washes of paint to move freely, embracing spontaneity and chance to create vibrant scenes filled with ghostly, humorous, and otherworldly figures. Rooted in ideas of cosmic energy and interconnectedness, his paintings balance abstraction with dreamlike narrative. Johnson earned his MFA from Hunter College in 2005 and has exhibited internationally, including a 2024 solo museum exhibition at La Térmica in Málaga. His work is held in collections such as MoMA and Colección SOLO.
