Living and working in Sydney, Australia, the New Zealand artist approaches portraiture as a thorough examination of the human image and its relationship to perception and beauty. His paintings feature individuals who seem to exist somewhere between the familiar and the unfamiliar, their carefully rendered faces conveying a perfected sense of imperfection: With an emphasis on exaggerated proportion, symmetry, and finely modeled features, Stichbury creates figures that appear both composed and strangely detached from the world around them, a tension between realism and artifice encouraging viewers to look beyond the surface of the face and consider how appearance influences our understanding of individuality and the human condition.
